Sao Tome and Principe is a participating country in CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries) – which consists of Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and Timor-Leste.

Becoming a Santomean citizens means facilitated entry, residence, and work opportunities within the Portuguese-speaking.

Portugal – All nationals of São Tomé e Príncipe (STP) now must apply for a visa in their home country to come to PT and request the one-year residence permit. Applicants for Portuguese citizenship must currently prove A2 level proficiency in the language. This may be supplemented by a history and civics exam of Portugal, and Portuguese proficiency may also be required for renewals of some residence permits.
